It's not often we here at the LAFD Blog promote a product, but a recent purchase by the Lehigh Acres Fire Control & Rescue District has really caught our attention. The new item in the LAFD arsenal for firefighting and extrication is the Brooke Robotic Utility Tool or B.R.U.T for short. This device, developed by the iRobot Corporation, the makers of the Roomba Vacuum, is revolutionizing how fire departments around the world approach their dangerous profession. Pictured here is the B.R.U.T single handidly performing extrication of a victim of a traffic crash. Gone are the days of heavy & messy hydraulic tools used for decades to remove trapped victims. Now, just place a glass of water and a cereal bar in the B.R.U.T at the start of shift, and turn her on. B.R.U.T will complete all the tasks of a human firefighter, including but not limited to, apparatus operations, structural firefighting, vehicle extrication and haz-mat operations, without the typical attitude problems or wage & insurance issues of human firefighters. Don't be the last department on your block to take advantage of the exciting features of this futuristic piece of firefighting equipment. Get your B.R.U.T now while supplies last! (Toothless models now available for smaller rural departments)

I happened upon some firefighters from the Florida Department of Forestry today doing some controlled burning at East 6th Street and Louis Avenue in Lehigh. In speaking with them I was told that even with all the rain we have had over the last two months, it is still very dry. I was able to witness this when a small section of the burn area flared up, so I took a few shots.

The gentleman self extricated himself and was assisted up the embankment by the LAFD and transported by Rescue 101.

The fire extended to the interior of the structure and apparently smoldered for awhile before being spotted by someone on the opposite side of the river who called 911. The LAFD covered Alva's Station during the incident and responded to and illegal burn.

Prior to becoming one of Lehigh Acres Bravest, LAFD Firefighter Sexton, who posseses great physical strength, worked in Hollywood as a stunt double in several well known tv series. He is best known for his work as a double for Lou Ferrigno in the Incredible Hulk series which aired from 1978 to 1983. Then actor Sexton covered for Ferrigno on numerous occasions due to health issues with Ferrigno who suffered for many years with gout. Sexton's acting career was cut short when he suffered permanent hair loss in a terrible accident while filming a commercial for Grecian Formula, and no longer could double for Ferrigno. As a firefighter, Sexton still loves to show off his incredible strength now and then. Today I caught him flipping over a pickup truck like it was a Matchbox toy. You are truly INCREDIBLE Firefighter Sexton, and the citizens of Lehigh Acres are lucky to have you on our team!

The Florida State Fire College has recently started offering it's newest Forcible Entry Training Course for Structural Firefighting. The new course, specifically designed for departments who's budgets are strained due to the reduction in funds caused by Amendment One, centers on teaching Florida Firefighters new and inventive ways to complete the task of forcible entry into structures using the most basic of hand tools. The course has taught firefighters like Lehigh Acres Firefighter/Paramedic Mike Pernal (pictured) to utilize simple tools already on hand like the flat head shovel, instead of spending hundreds of dollars of taxpayer money on more expensive equipment like Halligan Bars. Hats off to the Fire College, and more importantly, thanks to Firefighter Pernal for taking the time out of his busy schedule to get this new and important certification!

On a recent trip to St. Augustine, I stopped by fire headquarters to look at the apparatus. Not only is St Augustine the oldest city in the US, they have the oldest ladder truck built by E One. Ladder 7 was the first ladder truck built by E One and that was in 1981. Other than the cab being rebuilt after an accident with a street sweeper in 1991, the truck is all original and in great shape, and should stay that way too because it's not staffed due to a lack of manpower.
